Howard the Recovery Pup

So, Howard likes to be expensive. Love him, wouldn't trade him for the moon, but our little man isn't cheap.  Howboy tore his cruciate ligament which is basically the doggie ACL.  Huh? Dogs do that? I know.

We're not sure when it happened exactly. It was a progressive limp that was examined by a few vets over a series of months before we saw our specialist who turned Howard's leg into the science experiment you see in the top left. This is a model of a tibial tuberosity advancement. It is a new procedure that is less invasive than its predecessors but still requires a TEN WEEK recovery period with a severly decreased activity level.  I was completely terrified that the recovery would be horrific- but as we approach week 7, I can honestly say that it really hasn't been that bad.

Poor Howard has a shaved left backside from his paw to his tail and they cautioned us that he would need sunscreen bc he's such a whitey.  He had 25 staples and a huge incision, but I've assured him that chicks dig scars and so far it is healing beautifully.  Right after surgery we had a mechanism for slinging his backside around any time he moved, but after 3 days or so, Howard thought he was back to 100% which quickly translated into a poor 'tude.... he's been a grumpy little general due to the lack of exercise.

Howard was forced into mandatory laziness- not easy for a 2 year old.  I can't blame him for being a little tense, especially since the weird noises from the house demo started last week. (more about that later) Anyway, we visited the vet recently who cleared Howard for the ease back into exercise ( 5 min walks) and so far he has been a WILD man on them, so we're taking it all slowly to make sure everything stays put and that he continues on the road to a clean recovery. We also need to get him to shed some of those recovery lbs....
